When you find your heart is broken it's cold and sad and blue You may find it surprising you may not know what to do. You can ask it to be decent you may ask it to be kind a broken heart may hear you but it won't pay any mind fish to swim birds to fly hearts to flood you when you’re dry but I've got one that is broken It's not that someone broke it they've all been so good and true I didn’t mean to do it, but I guess it’s been mis-used If Jesus knows the answer He's hiding it from me or maybe I just don't like people doing things for me birds to fly fish to swim hearts to light you when you’re dim but I've got one that is broken And I know I'm not a doctor guess I could be wrong When I open up my heart I always end up with this song fish to swim birds to fly hearts to flood you when you’re dry but I've got one that is broken

Are you down? Too many nights laying sleepless numbing out and ghosting your friends do you feel that you're totally empty in the mirror you look, nobody there Allow me to act as your mirror I see you and I'll tell you again somehow I see you much clearer than you can right now Are you down? just stop trying It's ok you can come crying on your drought, in time the rain will flood you a new song in your mouth so come on, come here, are you down? Are you down? Did the song that you sang kind of dry up? Became the sound of you just losing ground Does it scare you to have no direction no song to sing nothing to say are you down? I will come down and sit right beside you in silence we will wait to hear a sound there's a new song that's way down inside you if you're still it'll come Are you down? just stop trying It's ok you can come crying on your drought, in time the rain will flood you a new song in your mouth so come on, come here, are you down?

April snow Such a blow Sends us in like why’d we even try Comes at us Nearly disastrous I’ve just never felt so cold and grey The bud is on the branch my dear Frozen stiff but isn’t going away The spring comes stop-and-startingly And nothing good is growing here today Say hello, say hello to April snow I had an awful dream Now I'm feeling mean Got a chill that's with me through the day I begin to cry Without knowing why I've just never felt so cold and grey The bud is on the branch my dear Frozen stiff but isn’t going away The spring comes stop-and-startingly And nothing good is growing here today Say hello, say hello to April snow Stay with me, through the April snow Stay with me

There are birds lingering Near the swing Where the grape grows Both they and I know That’s the spot Springtime robin came And built a frame Made of twigs and things Now she’s gone We’re still fixed on The place that robin used to be Everlasting Memory The past is in my bones In the soil and stones That surround me The dust in my lungs Oh secret scars Ache when weather’s bad The eyes the faces I let down Choices made, debts unpaid Live on in me and will surely be Everlasting Memory Don’t dare forget Speak their names And let the echo claim Your heart and head Shed the tears, Bend your knees now Pray that somehow they can be free Everlasting Memory Sing, sing their song together Bing yourself to their song, ah A bitter melody When darkness falls, and words will fail And hope remains beyond us Hold hold your hand out to me Hold them out toward me once more And this time I’ll entrust you to Everlasting Memory

It’s easy to fall into love I’m a child in your arms It’s so easy, like drifting downstream It’s easy, so easy, to do But it’s easy, the yoke is so easy The burden is light Like spending money or losing a fight It’s easy, so easy to do I walk through a deep and dark valley And come out still singing their tune And the tune that I sing is a thing Which is heavy and jagged and blue It’s easy to fall into love I’m a child in your arms It’s so easy, like drifting downstream It’s easy, so easy, to do Yes it’s easy, the yoke is so easy The burden is light Like the evening’s surrender to night It’s easy, so easy to do

about

A little about each song:

When You Find Your Heart is Broken: the seeds of this song were sown on a trip down to Connecticut with my wife and children. We listened to Jackson Brown, Carole King, James Taylor and Paul Simon. I find the doowop influence in their music sort of adorable and quite authentic. I've always loved the accessibility of that style and I found myself at the piano in the following months playing the pretty parts of this number. I'm floored by the background vocals of Robin Dann and Felicity Williams, they wrote the parts and delivered them with so much colour, joy, and tenderness.

Are You Down?: I was listening to a lot of Al Green for a bit. I love his writing voice, both musically and lyrically. He is both honest and spiritual in a beautiful way. Around the same time, a few of our friends seemed to be spiralling a bit and I wanted to write for them. This song emerged at that point and was produced and arranged by Pat Brennan, and co-produced by Beatchild (Drake, Divine Brown).

April Snow: this was one of those, "I will sit down and try to write a song" songs. It was snowing in April when I wrote it and I thought the words were pretty basic and maybe a little dumb, but I kept working on them over a few weeks and managed to finish it. About a month after it was finished, I realized that the song is directly related to a recent loss in the family and what an "Act of God" can feel like. It was my way of getting through it.

Pat Brennan's sister-in-law, Anna Miles, graciously lent her voice and flute-playing to this track.

Everlasting Memory: I wrote the melody and chords for this song listening to a lecture about Ukraine under Soviet rule. For a certain period Ukrainians were forbidden from practicing their religion, which meant no holidays, no communal prayer, none of the traditions and rhythms which had been central to life. They would meet in secret to celebrate holidays. The bravery and resilience of these people is astounding. After writing the music, I began to think about what my relationship was to them, those who were dead- those who I'd known, and those who I'd heard about. Putting things right, keeping a candle burning, honouring traditions... what is there to do? The funeral service in Ukraine has a refrain, from which this song takes its own, everlasting memory. Ours, theirs, God's. This song is a meditation along those lines.

Special features of this one are Samuel Nadurak playing the cello and Stefan Shewchuk playing the solo on electric guitar.

Come to Me (album version): This is the first song I wrote during that period of spiritual renewal. I wrote it while driving- melody first. It's the simplest way to write, without an instrument, and I end up being especially devoted to songs I write this way.

The best part of this recording is Doug Tielli playing the tuba and trombones. I had heard a song of Doug's ten years ago (you can hear it here: dougtielli.bandcamp.com/track/a-dream-that-i-am) and I loved the horns. So I sent him an email, totally out of the blue, asking if he would consider playing horns on this tune. He not only said yes, but he sent me seventeen tracks to work with the next day.

We re-vamped this one a bunch so it would fit better with the rest of the songs on these EPs.

A couple general notes about the genesis of this project:

1) I had a period of spiritual renewal which really established my vocation as an artist and inspired the writing of these songs. In late fall 2019, I felt the call and I answered it. What ensued was the work. It felt easy, but it took plenty of time and much of my attention. It is a pure joy to create and the purity of it is undeniably the experience of grace at work.

2) I met Pat Brennan around the same time. He's the producer and piano-player who was crucial in making these songs and recordings what they are. I met him through a friend, sort of by chance ;-) and he has become a friend and a cherished collaborator. His arrangements, adjustments, ideas, instrumentation, and flair became so important to this record that at one point I proposed that we be a band. He turned me down, but working with him has given these songs the sun they've needed to bloom.

Thanks for listening!

Landon A. R. Coleman Ottawa, Ontario

He has a sticker from the local “Light Favourites” radio station on his bumper. An Albertan solo artist living in Ottawa, Coleman plays elegant pop. “I love Nat King Cole, Jim Reeves, John Denver… give me strings, horns, a strong melody.” says Coleman. His sound recalls the retro-tinged eclecticism of Belle and Sebastian and the modern torch songs of Richard Hawley in equal measure. ... more
